{"id":4666,"date":"2016-02-08T12:03:52","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T12:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eo.aei.mpg.de\/en\/?post_type=spotlight&#038;p=4666"},"modified":"2020-04-27T12:03:39","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T11:03:39","slug":"embeddedworld","status":"publish","type":"spotlight","link":"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/spotlight\/embeddedworld\/","title":{"rendered":"The embedded universe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Could our world possess extra spatial <a title=\"D\" href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/explandict\/dimension-2\/\">dimensions<\/a> &#8211; and if yes, why do we only see three of them in everyday life? This question is not as far-fetched as it might sound &#8211; there are some candidates for a theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/explandict\/quantum-gravity\/\">quantum gravity<\/a>, notably string theory, in which the world naturally has nine or even ten space dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>As to why we do not see the extra dimensions in everyday life, there are different possible answers. One is that the additional dimensions can be &#8220;rolled up&#8221; &#8211; more information about this can be found in the spotlight topic <a title=\"Extra dimensions - and how to hide them\" href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/spotlight\/hiding_extra_dimensions\/\">Extra dimensions &#8211; and how to hide them<\/a>. On the other hand, matters could be rather different. This is what the so-called brane-world models of string theory are about &#8211; models of an embedded universe.<\/p>\n<h2>An embedded world<\/h2>\n<p>The basic idea of the brane-world models is the following: that the four-dimensional world we know (three space dimensions plus time) is embedded into ten-dimensional spacetime as a so-called brane. This brane would be three-dimensional space as we know it, and it would be merely a small part of a nine-dimensional space &#8211; similar to what is shown in the following image, where a two-dimensional piece of paper (green) is embedded in three-dimensional space:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9362\" title=\"Ant on surface \/ \u00a9 Daniela Leitner, Markus P\u00f6ssel \u2013 Einstein Online\" src=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relativitaet_und_Quanten_Ameise_Bran_\u00a9_Daniela_Leitner_Markus_Poessel_Einstein-Online.jpg\" alt=\"Ant on surface\" width=\"700\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relativitaet_und_Quanten_Ameise_Bran_\u00a9_Daniela_Leitner_Markus_Poessel_Einstein-Online.jpg 848w, https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relativitaet_und_Quanten_Ameise_Bran_\u00a9_Daniela_Leitner_Markus_Poessel_Einstein-Online-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Relativitaet_und_Quanten_Ameise_Bran_\u00a9_Daniela_Leitner_Markus_Poessel_Einstein-Online-768x466.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the situation pictured above, the ant&#8217;s world is effectively two-dimensional &#8211; the ant can run around on the piece of paper, but it won&#8217;t even notice that there is a third spatial dimension. Similarly on a brane world: almost all elementary particles, in particular the photons that are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/explandict\/carrier-particle\/\">carrier particles<\/a> of the electric repulsion or attraction between charged particles, would be confined to the brane. They could not leave the brane, and thus would be totally oblivious to the existence of additional dimensions. That would be why we humans, as well, could neither see the extra dimensions nor move in the corresponding extra directions.<\/p>\n<h2>Gravity is special<\/h2>\n<p>However, there is one exception. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/explandict\/graviton-2\/\">Gravitons<\/a>, the carrier particles of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/explandict\/gravitation\/\">gravitational interaction<\/a>, cannot be confined to a brane. They could move in all nine spatial dimensions. That is of interest as it opens up possibilities for detecting the extra dimensions experimentally. The way the gravitational force decreases with distance is directly depending on the number of space dimensions (for the analogous example of the electric force, this argument can be found in the spotlight topic <a title=\"Hunting for extra dimensions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/spotlight\/extra_dimensions_force\/\">Hunting for extra dimensions<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>So far, the distance-dependence so characteristic for <a title=\"N\" href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/explandict\/newtonian-gravity\/\">Newton&#8217;s law of gravity<\/a>, where the force decreases with the square of the distance (double the distance, and the force is but a quarter as strong) has only been tested experimentally down to distances of more than a tenth of a millimetre.
